LIVE FROM BOOK EXPO: The Adult Author Breakfast

It's Deb Nance at Readerbuzz here again, onsite at BookExpo. Happily, I decided this year to buy a ticket to the Adult Author Breakfast. The breakfast showcases celebrity authors speaking about their upcoming titles.

First up was author Owen King who has just completed a novel with his dad...yes, look closely at know Dad....

...Yup, it's Stephen King. He said their family was always tossing story ideas around the breakfast table. Their book is Sleeping Beauties.

The rest of the authors are (left to right): Claire Messud (The Burning Girl); astronaut Scott Kelly (Endurance: My Year in Space); Jesmyn Ward (Sing, Unburied, Sing); and Pete Souza (Obama: An Intimate Portrait). Messud's book is about a friendship of two adolescent girls over time. She told us, "We all remember middle school." Scott Kelly said he was such a poor student in school that he never dreamed he'd make anything of himself. What changed him? He read a good book, The Right Stuff. Jesmyn Ward said, "The past lives with us in Mississippi." Pete Souza was the official photographer during the Obama administration. "I kinda miss this guy," Souza said.

The master of ceremonies and an author in her own right was Whitney Cummings. She also stars in the tv series, 2 Broke Girls. Her new book is a memoir, I'm Fine and Other Lies.

Is there any better way to spend breakfast than with talking to booksellers from Canada and Nantucket, a blogger, and an author while munching down bagels and muffins and listening to writers talk about their latest books?

  1. Very cool!! Thanks for sharing!

  2. Deb, as usual, you are awesome! It's so cool to have you onsite as our special reporter. I really don't know how you can find time to do this. I was so exhausted last year during BEA. Thanks again, and I hope you bring back to your school as many books as you did last year ;-)
