BEA BLOGGERS CONFERENCE: Monetization & Business

Today in Chicago, the BEA Bloggers Conference took place and the afternoon was devoted to a number of round table discussions.  We have already shared a couple round-ups with you, but now we bring you yet another.  Please welcome Tirzah of The Compulsive Reader, the co-facilitator of monetization and business.

At the business and monetization table, we discussed the various ways that bloggers can earn money from their blog. We agreed that there are three different ways to generate revenue: Products, Services, and Monetizing Content. Products can be anything bookish or blog-related that you create and sell, such as physical items (notebooks, t-shirts, totes), or downloads (like calendars, organizing methods, teaching tools), or design themes. This takes talent and expertise, oftentimes outside of blogging talents.

Services can be anything that you do for other bloggers or authors. Many bloggers offer design services, work as virtual assistants, social media consultants, blog tour planning, etc. This is related to blogging, and many bloggers have gotten such work due to their blog work, but it's not always directly related to your blog.

Monetization of content is placing ads or sponsorships or affiliate links within your normal blog work. It's not always the most lucrative, but it complements the work you already do for free. Bloggers have worked with Riot Ad Network, Litbreaker, and BlogAds. In some cases, we've worked directly with authors or publishers to place ads, but that seemed to be rare.

The most important thing to remember is that you need to know your audience, and you need to have quality content. The more money you hope to earn, the more time you're going to have to spend. Start small, be realistic with your goals, and have fun. Get creative with your work, and don't be afraid to treat your blog as a professional job. Both Brittany and I have gotten real-life paying jobs partly due to our blog work. Maintaining a blog shows that you are dedicated, creative, and able to write content on a frequent basis--all very marketable skills! There's no one way to earn money!
