  4. Hard to believe that Louise Penny's The Beautiful Mystery and Geraldine Brooks' Caleb's Crossing were overlooked for mystery and historical fiction categories. Penny has won numerous awards for The Beautiful Mystery and her other mystery novels, and Brooks is one of the best historical fiction writers around.
