BBAW Best Book Blogging Event

Today marked the first day of Book Blogger Appreciation Week, another fantastic event that each of you are most likely participating in. As organizers for Armchair BEA we were thrilled to see our event make the short list and today's announcement thrilled each of us quite nearly beyond words.

Thank you so much to each of you as well as those who helped organize, sponsor and all of the various other behind the scenes work that made Armchair BEA what it was! Our little event began back in May of 2010 and we would have never imagined the response we've received since then. It certainly wouldn't be the event it was without all of the amazing book bloggers (YOU!) who participated.

On behalf of all the organizers, thank you for your continued support and for making Armchair BEA the event it is!

The End, My Friend

It has been quite a week. Filled with over 500 participants, panels, Twitter parties, networking, giveaways, learning more about BEA, the publishing industry and blogging, I don't know about you but I'm exhausted - and we didn't go anywhere!  Guess what? We are not quite done.

As you relax by the pool or have fun with your families this weekend, we ask that you take some time to write out a short recap of the week. What did it mean to you to participate in Armchair BEA 2011? What were your highlights? Would you do it again? Show your love for this week one last time and let us know what, if anything, you learned and enjoyed most!

Still looking for more you say? We do want to let you know we've partnered with Book Expo America's Official Podcast: Author Studio to bring you the live chats they had with authors during BEA this year. Starting next week you can begin to look for your favorite authors talking about their upcoming & past books as well as a variety of other bookish fun. Definitely something to enjoy over the next few weeks while the dust settles from this week's festivities. Find the link in our side bar to the right for complete access beginning next week!

On behalf of all of the organizers, I want to say how incredibly touched/shocked/amazed/speechless I am over the enthusiasm and sheer number of participants we had this year. It has meant the world to us all to see our little tongue-in-cheek joke turn into something so beneficial to the book blogging community. To our sponsors, publishers, authors and other bloggers who donated time and/or gifts for our giveaway pile, thank you. To be recognized as a legitimate event during what is one of the busiest and biggest weeks for everyone in the book community is more than any of us ever dreamed. Thank you to everyone who made Armchair BEA 2011 such a rousing success!

Have a great weekend everyone! We'll see you next year!

Look for at least two more updates about giveaways as well as an end-of-event survey we'd love to have everyone complete to make next year's event even that much better.

On-Site at BEA: Final Day

Yesterday was the final day on the floor of BEA. Due to the late hour that I got back home last night from the launch of This is Teen, I wasn't able to post this video last night. But, here it is now in all its glory.

Thank you to all of you who left such kind comments for me. I hope that these vlogs gave you a little taste of what it's like to be at BEA without the sore muscles and humidity.  I also hope that many of you who weren't able to attend this year will make it next year. If not, we hope you'll join us again for Armchair BEA.

Thanks to a few of our fantastic Sponsors we've had the chance to take a look inside what's going on at BEA as the show unfolds. Now, they've taken it one step further and provided us with some fantastic video shout-outs from some incredible authors! Thank you so much!

This time we have the pleasure of sharing with Armchair BEA participants a wonderful video from Brian H. Peterson, author of The Blossoming of the World : Essays and Images. Take a look!

In The Blossoming of the World, Brian H. Peterson—author of the critically acclaimed The Smile at the Heart of Things—picks up both pen and camera and journeys to the deep end of life. Along the way he confronts some painful contradictions—beauty and violence, love and grief—and reflects on illness, family, death, dreams, epiphanies, and the birth of self-awareness.
More storyteller than philosopher, Peterson struggles to reconcile his Christian faith with his love of science, creativity, and spirituality in all its manifestations. Through word and image he quietly looks for—and finds—the common ground that unites thinking and compassionate people of all shapes and sizes.
Full-color reproductions of Peterson's photographs accompany and enrich this collection of essays and reflections.

Thank you so much to our Sponsor Brian H. Peterson and Marissa at JKS Communications for arranging this video!

Synopsis for The Gray Zone by Daphna Ziman
A terrified single mother must travel through hell and back to clear her name and protect her children from their maniacal father. Kelly Jensen is only six years old when she witnesses her mother's murder and her father's wrongful conviction. Thrown into foster care, Kelly is both abused and neglected, and by age fifteen she is a runaway, relying on her street smarts to become a master at identity theft. Kelly accepts the marriage proposal of a man who she thinks can offer her a better life, only to fall victim to his vicious enslavement. Years later, estranged from her husband and struggling to support her children, Kelly becomes a suspect in the murder of her lover, a congressman. Defence attorney Jake Brooks finds Kelly irresistible, and his obsession leads him to risk his own career to help her. Together, the two uncover a sordid link among immoral foster care parents, high rollers in Vegas, politicians, Kelly's husband, and law enforcement itself. Kelly ultimately takes fate into her own hands - in the grey zone that exists outside the black-and-white world of the legal system.

What We Have in Common, No Matter What Our Niche Is

This guest post comes from Armchair BEA co-founder and team member Florinda from The 3 R’s Blog, who has been with us all week while also attending the "real" BEA and BBC.

Greetings from the Book Blogger Convention in New York City, where I’ll be moderating this afternoon’s "Blogging for a Niche Market" session!

At The 3 R’s Blog, I don’t focus on a particular literary category or reader niche; that was actually one reason I was invited to be part of this particular panel (yes, I asked). Because of that, my personal interest in working with the panelists to develop our presentation content was finding a way to tie it together - what common concerns and interests do book bloggers share, regardless of their niche? When I asked the panel members to suggest two or three issues that mattered in their particular niches, some of the responses turned out to be more universal than specific. We’ll be touching on those in our session today as well, and I wanted to share those thoughts with Armchair BEA participants too.

Jen Forbus of Jen's Book Thoughts noted that some of her issues are those any book blogger encounters: “(N)ot enough time...people pitching books that are not appropriate...people not reading my review policy...etc.” I think most of us have been there, haven’t we?

Another near-universal issue is crafting our reviews. Rebecca Reid of Rebecca Reads addressed one of the major challenges of book reviewing, period: “The books we write about tend to elicit distinct (intellectual and/or) emotional responses, and oftentimes we have so much to say we want to discuss one work at length. The blogosphere probably doesn’t want to hear all we have to say. How do we find a good balance?”

Perhaps it doesn’t happen with our very first post or two, but at some point early in our blogging lifetimes, we have to assess what we want to do with our space. Jill from Rhapsody in Books touched on this, advising: “(D)ecide very clearly on the goal of your blog. If you want to be strictly a 'niche' blogger, you won't get many visits from non-niche readers. On the other hand, if you want to be eclectic, niche people are not only apt to miss you, but also not like you because you are basically saying they should take the time to comb through your other posts for the occasional post of interest. So invariably, you will lose readers whichever way you choose. It is important therefore that you decide on your priorities for the blog." I’d add that we should understand that those goals and priorities don’t have to be permanent, though. As our blogging interests shift, we should be prepared to reevaluate them.

Awareness of our audience is also a factor in determining those blogging goals. I think most book bloggers realize this, but it may come into play even more strongly for those with a niche focus. Sarah at the group blog Forever Young Adult observed that she and her blogging partners have a mission “(to) help adults find YA books that resonate with adults, not just teens. Sometimes we read a YA book and think, ‘This would be great for a teenager but... not so much for an adult.’ (We also discuss) Gateway Books, i.e. books that lure non-YA readers into YA.” YA is a category that struggles with its image among people who don’t read it; romance’s challenges in that area might be even bigger. Katie (Katiebabs) of Babbling About Books and More urged those perception issues to be confronted: “The public opinion about the romance genre in general (is that the books are) 'smut' - 'bodice rippers' only read by lonely, fat women. (In addition), romance review blogs are considered to be the mean-girls of the blogging world. Again, this is something that needs to confronted to help change the views of a blogging audience who think it’s fact.”

Sarah and Katie's reflections point out to me that one of the roles we should be prepared to accept as book bloggers is that of defenders of, and advocates for, the books we love.

It can be comforting to know that your challenges aren’t yours alone. Although it sometimes feels easier to emphasize our differences, we book bloggers have more in common than we sometimes realize, which means we can learn from each other across all our niches.

This time we have the pleasure of sharing with Armchair BEA participants a wonderful video from author Wendy Delsol. Her book Stork received rave reviews and her upcoming release and sequel, Frost, is one of the books to look for in 2011! Take a look at the synopsis' below and make sure to say hi to Wendy in the comments as well!

Stork by Wendy Delsol: Sixteen-year-old Katla LeBlanc has just moved from Los Angeles to Minnesota. As if it weren’t enough that her trendy fashion sense draws stares, Katla soon finds out that she’s a Stork, a member of a mysterious order of women tasked with a very unique duty. But Katla’s biggest challenge may be finding her flock at a new school. Between being ignored by Wade, the arrogant jock she stupidly fooled around with, and constantly arguing with gorgeous farm boy and editor-in-chief Jack, Katla is relieved when her assignment as the school paper’s fashion columnist brings with it some much-needed friendship. But as Homecoming approaches, Katla uncovers a shocking secret about her past — a secret that binds her fate to Jack’s in a way neither could have ever anticipated. With a nod to Hans Christian Andersen and inspired by Norse lore, Wendy Delsol’s debut novel introduces a hip and witty heroine who finds herself tail-feathers deep in small-town life.

Frost by Wendy Delsol: After the drama of discovering that she’s a member of the Storks, a mystical order of women endowed with powerful abilities, Katla Leblanc is finally settling into her life in chilly Minnesota. In fact, the ex-California girl even hopes for a white Christmas. But Katla’s wintry wish unexpectedly turns into the snowstorm of the century, drawing the attention of Brigid, a gorgeous environmental researcher with an amazing array of fur coats and an unusual interest in Katla’s boyfriend, Jack.

Thank you so much to our Sponsor Candlewick Press for arranging this video! Find them on Twitter and on Facebook so you don't miss any new fantastic books coming out soon!

A missing child. A devastated young mom. Two girls—one traumatic event.

Emmy Rane is married at nineteen , a mother by twenty. Trapped in a life with a husband she no longer loves, Baby is her only joy. Then one sunny day in September, Emmy takes a few fateful steps away from her baby and returns to find her missing. All that is left behind is a yellow sock. Fourteen years later, Sophie, a homeschooled, reclusive teenage girl is forced to move frequently and abruptly from place to place, perpetually running from what her mother calls the "No Good." One afternoon, Sophie breaks the rules, ventures out, and meets Joey and his two aunts. It is this loving family that opens Sophie's eyes, giving her the courage to look into her past. What she discovers changes her world forever...

The riveting stories of Emmy and Sophie—alternating narratives of loss, imprisonment, and freedom regained—escalate with breathless suspense toward an unforgettable climax.

Please fill out the form below to enter. Must be an Armchair BEA participant. Giveaway is open to US residents only. The giveaway will run from May 26, 2011 until May 28, 2011 midnight EST.

Nurturing Book Blogging Relationships

Today's suggested posting topic is all about Relationships!

Yesterday we talked about networking, reaching out to those people in the book blogging community. Networking is a great way to meet people but what about maintaining those connections? As we build our blogs, people comment on our posts, drop us emails, contact us on Twitter, etc. Sometimes those brief connections grow into relationships.

Today post about a relationship you’ve formed with a particular publisher, author, blogger, or bookstore. Or you could give us your best tips on working with publishers and authors, like how and when to ask for ARCs (Advanced Reader Copies), dealing with review requests, etc. Kristi from The Story Siren did a whole series on publishers interactions, what has been your experience? Is there something you wish someone would have told you?

To turn the tables, you can talk about how you'd like to be approached by publishers. What is the ideal book pitch?

What about other bloggers? How do you connect with them? Is there a secret? What about authors? How do you maintain a friendship with an author when you're a book blogger? Do you partner with an independent bookstore? How is that experience? What are your tips to other bloggers who want to do the same?

Maybe you have more questions than answers. Now's the time to put it out there and get advice from your fellow bloggers.

Speaking of connecting, both Twitter parties are on today from 10-12 AM EST and 8-10 PM EST. Remember to use the hashtag #armchairbea
